Obituary for Edythe E. Oxner (Ernst)

Oxner, Edythe E – 92, Lunenburg, NS died at home on Wednesday March 28, 2012 following a brief illness.

Born in Mahone Bay, NS on May 3, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Selvyn and Elva (Meisner) Ernst.

Edythe attended school in Mahone Bay. Following graduation she attended Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB and the Maritime Business College in Halifax. She enjoyed badminton, tennis and basketball in her early years. Her working career included employment with the Fisheries Loan Board of Nova Scotia and Imperial Oil Limited until she retired to marry John Oxner in 1944. They settled in Lunenburg where Edythe became a charter member and first Treasurer of the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in 1948. Together with her husband she was an active member of the FMH Society which built the hospital that opened in 1952 on its present site. Edythe was a member of the Boscowan Chapter IODE for over 60 years and active organizer of their Marathon Bridge. She was always up for a good bridge game. Edythe was a faithful member of St. John’s Anglican Church and served on its Altar Guild for 48 years.

Edythe is survived by her nieces Barbara (Tim) Johnston, Indian Point, NS; Josephine Eisenhauer, Lunenburg; Janet (Graham) Bennett, Guelph, ON; Ruth (Dick) Taylor, Windsor, NS and Ann Buik, Collingwood, ON and nephews Bruce (Jean) Elliott, New Ross, NS, Robert (Barbara) Hiltz, Jordan Falls, NS and David (Gail) Hiltz, Dartmouth, NS along with many grand-nieces and grand-nephews including “her boy” Jim Eisenhauer and his wife Heather, Lunenburg, and their children Graham (Christine), Katherine and Anne (Lorne Spence) and granddaughter Laura Eisenhauer.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband John W W Oxner and sisters Marjorie Elliott, Marie Barry and Winnifred Ernst.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy 3, Lunenburg, NS. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00AM Saturday March 31, 2012 at St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Archdeacon Michael Mitchell officiating. Family visitation and reception at St. John’s Parish Hall will follow the memorial service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, IODE or charity of your choice.
