Albert St. Clair ""Al""  Young
Albert St. Clair “Al” Young, 79, of Blockhouse, passed away peacefully, Friday, August 8, 2008 in Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Al was born on November13, 1928 to Robert and Olive (Hiltz) Young of Zwicker’s Island, Indian Point.

At 15, Albert signed up for the Canadian Merchant Marine, serving out the duration of WW11 on oil tankers crisscrossing the Atlantic. After the war ended, he sailed for Imperial Oil Limited. On August 11, 1951 Al married Grace Ernst of Indian Point in Hamilton Ontario. Having sailed to Peru, England, & Italy, one of his favorite trips was an Alaskan cruise to celebrate Al and Grace’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. From 1960 until 1968 he was employed by Palmer’s Refrigeration Ltd., Halifax. In 1968 the family moved to Blockhouse because Al had a job with South Shore Sales and Service Ltd., Lunenburg. In 1974 he started Young’s Refrigeration Ltd. which he ran until his retirement in 1997. He was a faithful member and served on the church council of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, Spryfield and St John’s Lutheran Church, Mahone Bay where he was council secretary from 1973 until 1977. He was a member of the Blockhouse Fire Department from 1976 until 1984 and served as fire chief from 1980 until 1984. Al was a member of the Maritimes Fire Chiefs Association for 28 years, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 23, Lunenburg where he held various positions on the executive, and a member of the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association. He is missed by Fellinni , his 21 yr old black angora cat.

He is survived by his loving wife, the former Grace Ernst, and his 4 sons, David ( Jeanette Poirier), Peter and Paul, all of Blockhouse, and Michael (Daniel Beavdoin) of Montreal. sister, Shirley Goos, Victoria, BC.

He was predeceased by a sister, Ola Mae and two half-sisters, Elva and Dora.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Al with his family during visitation Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy.# 3, Lunenburg, and where a Legion Service will be held Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. Funeral Service to celebrate Al’s life will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mahone Bay, Rev. Stephen Kristenson officiating. Interment will be in Garden of Rest Cemetery, Blockhouse.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church Building Fund, Indian Point Cemetery, Blockhouse Fire Department, or a charity of your choice.

Life Story for Albert St. Clair ""Al"" Young
