Obituary for Captain Alexander Harvey "Alex " Green

Captain Alexander Harvey "Alex " Green
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Capt. Alexander “Alex” Harvey Green, 68, of Lunenburg on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Born in Parson’s Harbour, NL, he was the son Melita (Symes) Green, Port Aux Basques and of the late, Thomas Green.

From early childhood Alex made a living on the sea. He started dory fishing with his father when he was just six and at 16, he moved to Lunenburg to help provide for his family. Alex would go on to become one of High Liner’s most accomplished sea captains before his retirement from the company in 2003. Alex finished his career at sea, fishing alongside his brother Jim, with Lunar Fishing. In recent months, Alex even had the opportunity to reconnect with the fishermen he saved at sea in 1982. Alex was a skilled captain, well liked and well respected by those who went to sea with him.

Alex’s love of the sea never wavered and he spent his retirement years aboard the Cape Sable, sharing stories and lending his expertise to the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, a job he cherished.

Alex lived a life of faithful service. Kind and thoughtful, he was always ready to lend a hand at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #23 monthly breakfast, operate the VON van, help at the monthly Lunenburg County First! Chowder Club, or work at the local food bank. He also helped organize the annual Santa Claus parade, was past president of the Fishermen’s Annual Picnic and a founding member and Past President of the Lunenburg Fishermen’s Memorial Monument.

But perhaps his biggest contribution to a life of service was through his work at St. John’s Anglican Church where he was a faithful member for many years.

Dedicated to his community and to his church, his efforts will be sadly missed by all those who benefited from his compassion and service to others.

Alex was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be truly missed by those who had the incredible fortune to know and love him.

Alex is survived by his wife, the former Sharon Tanner; daughter, Denise; sons, Jeff (Teri); Jamie (Tara); grandchildren, Brooklyn, Ethan, Elena, Ashley, Peyton, Robyn; mother, Melita Green, sisters, Rita Mae (Allan) Skinner; Jean (Sid) Young; Edith (Lloyd) Ford; Shirley (Dan) Sheaves, all of Port Aux Basques, NL; Edna (Gerald) Savoury, Burnt Islands, NL; Joan (Clayton) Dunford, Rose Blanche, NL; Ann Green, Edmonton, AB; brother, Jim (Viola) Green, Lunenburg, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his father, he was predeceased by his brother Roy and his sister Ada Blanche.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A memorial service celebrating Alex’s life will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, on Saturday, June 27 at 2 p.m., Archdeacon Michael Mitchell officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.

Flowers from the immediate family only. Memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg or to the Lunenburg Fishermen’s Memorial Monument.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital and South Shore Regional Hospital for their wonderful care of Alex.
