Obituary for Donald Harry "Donnie" Ferguson

Donnie Ferguson, age 70, of Sunnybrook, passed away at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater on Aug 23, 2015 with his loving wife Margaret and family by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Harry and Dorothy (Colford) Ferguson.

Donnie was a 2nd generation firefighter with the City of Dartmouth, retiring after 34 years of service. A well-liked and respected businessman, he carried out many successful ventures with his loyal partner, Gary Lavers. He was also instrumental in founding the Alderney Marina.

A caring guy, Donnie was always ready to help anyone in need or to entertain with one of his stories or jokes and was always able to make people laugh with his quick wit. He had many fond memories of adventures on the sea in Nelleke or on the road with his 5th wheel and of the friends he and Margaret met along the way. His favorite spot in his last years was on the porch of his Florida home where again, his circle of friends grew.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughter, Cynthia Kelly, East Chezzetcook; grandchildren, Timothy, Gregory, Samantha, Joseph and James.

He was predeceased by a son, Stephen.

Donnie wanted to express his gratitude to all the caring friends and family who shared joyful memories with him over his last months. A special thank you to all the wonderful doctors and nurses at Palliative Care, South Shore Regional Hospital, and the VG as well as VON for their extraordinary care.

A Memorial Mass will be held to celebrate Donnie's life on Friday August 28 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Norbert's Roman Catholic Church, Lunenburg, Fr. Jim MacDonald, OMI officiating. A reception will follow at the Dana L. Sweeny funeral Home, 11213, Hwy #3, Lunenburg.

Interment will be in St Genevieve's Catholic Church Cemetery, East Chezzetcook at a later date. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.
