Obituary for
Evelyn Gertrude Ritcey
RITCEY, Evelyn Gertrude, of Halifax, formerly of Riverport, NS, died Monday, November 23. Evelyn’s life ended peacefully, seated quietly on her sofa.
Born January 2, 1927, in Riverport to Capt. Henry Creaser and his wife, Lettie, she was the younger of their two girls.
A graduate of the Lunenburg Academy, she worked for the Bank of Montreal for a decade before marrying Paul Ritcey of Riverport in 1955. She was a devoted mother, a skilled cook, and a strong community volunteer. Evelyn and Paul lived their entire married life in Riverport, in the house in which Paul was raised, and in sight of Evelyn’s birthplace across the harbour. Following Paul’s death in 1993, Evelyn continued to live in that home until 2008, when she gave up her domestic responsibilities and moved to Halifax.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, by her husband, and by her sister, Mavis Romkey.
She is survived by her children, Stephen, Anna, David, and Susan, and by their spouses, Leslie Matheson, Gerard Charlet, Bonnie Marks, and Tom Hewlett, whom she treated as if they were also her children. She is survived also by her grandchildren, Paul, Miriam, John, Mark, David, and Amanda. Their development and achievements filled her with joy and pride, and their photos clustered prominently in her living room, jostling for space with her beloved houseplants.
Funeral service Saturday, December 5, 2015, at 1:00 pm, from Trinity United Church, Rose Bay. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Interment in Shepherd’s Hill Cemetery, Riverport. If you wish to make a memorial donation to charity, please choose one which speaks to your relationship with Evelyn. Flowers are very welcome at the service – Evelyn loved blooms.
