Obituary for Glen Henry Archibald Geldert

Glen Henry Archibald Geldert
Geldert, Glen Henry Archibald
December 20, 1937 – March 16, 2016

It is with great sorrow we announce that Glen passed away following a long battle with frontotemporal dementia, much loved husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Born in Bridgewater, he was the only child and cherished son of Loren Wilfred and Dorothy Elizabeth (Adams) Geldert.

Glen spent his childhood in Lunenburg before moving to Halifax to pursue his post secondary education. At Dalhousie University he received an Engineering Diploma and then graduated from the Nova Scotia Technical College as an Electrical Engineer in 1962. His career began in Montreal with Northern Electric. He then moved back to Nova Scotia where he had a long and enjoyable career in management and operations with Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Co. Limited (MT&T). He worked there for more than 25 years, taking on increasing responsibility and retiring as VP, Operations. In addition, Glen was heavily involved with the family offshore scallop fishing business, Adams & Knickle Co. Limited, helping the company reach and celebrate a milestone of 100 years in business in 1997.

Growing up in Lunenburg, and as a descendant of a long line of seafaring captains, Glen loved the water and spent much of his free time sailing and racing with family and friends off Second Peninsula until well into his 60s. He was an active member of the Lunenburg Yacht Club, as well as the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. Following his retirement, Glen found a love for golf, and spent many years travelling to Florida to weather out the winter.

Glen was so proud of his hole in one at the Oakfield Golf Club, however he may have thrown a few golf clubs and lost many balls to get to that point! He was a member of Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax and Heritage Oaks Golf Club, Sarasota, Florida.

He is survived by his loving wife Georgina and her family, his daughters – Nancy (Andrew) MacDonald and Beth (Ron) Girard, grandchildren – Kate and Ben MacDonald, Zoe and Eva Girard. He was predeceased by his parents and his infant grandson – Zachary Alexander Girard.

Visitation with the family will be held at the Waegwoltic Club, Halifax, N.S. on Thursday March 24th from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. At Glen’s request, there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the QE II Health Sciences Foundation, the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia or the charity of your choice. A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated and loving staff at the Windsor Elms, as well as those who cared for Glen over the past several years. Online condolences may be made at
