The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Richard Orpin can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Condolences

Condolence From: Vera Rand Roberts
Condolence: What a
wonderful life
to celebrate.

Dear Sharon,
I apologize for the delay in sending this card. I’ve been staring at it for two weeks
trying to find the words that I want to share with you. I’ve decided that beyond words it’s
a feeling of sadness and loss. Rich was one of those people that I liked instantly. Remember
when I met him we laughed at the “Katie test”? If she liked him, he was okay. And she did.
I am glad you found each other and were able to spend all the years together that you did.
Rich’s loss also made me stop and contemplate what my life would be like if I lost Steve. We’ve
only been together 8 years, but his absence in my life would be profound as I know Rich’s in your life is to you.
He was a great guy and I thought the world of him and was fortunate to have known him.
Please know that you are in thoughts and prayers.

What a special person
to remember with love.

Love Vera

Condolence From: Paul
Condolence: Hi Everyone,
It is with a heavy heart I have to pass the news the passing of Richard Orpin. Dick as some of you know was fighting another bout of cancer and as a result of the medicine he was given he developed a buildup of water around his heart and lungs. Yesterday at 1230 his heart gave out and he is now in a better place. Though I can picture him giving me a roll of the eyes at that statement.
I met Dick when I joined the Auxiliary and we had been friends for the last 23 years. We trained together and trained I don’t know how many Auxiliarists and Regulars and Reservists while we were both active at station Boothbay. In his words, we had the best years at the station for aux members because we had such great support from the crews that were stationed there. At station Boothbay there was no Regulars, Reservists or Auxiliary. We were all Coast Guard and family.
Dick met Sharon and they were married 20 years ago, He told me once that he had never been happier then when they met. In 2003 they moved to Nova Scotia and they made it their home. They had the gardens they put in and Dick built a couple small boats. He and Sharon enjoyed life and made the best of everything they did together.
Sharon has told me that there will be no funeral or memorial service, Captains orders. He is to be cremated and at some point she plans to have a “Viking funeral” for him and bury him at sea. She also asked me to pass this on to his friends here, and that we always remember the good times we all had together. If a person is not forgotten, then in a sense they are always with us.
Paul
