Obituary for Lorna Nina Louise Laing (Conrad)

It is with great sadness that the family of Lorna Nina Louise Laing, 95, of Oxford, and formerly of Lockeport and Rose Bay, announces her passing on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Cumberland Regional Hospital, Amherst with her family by her side.

Born July 18,1921 in Rose Bay, she was a daughter of the late James Lennox and Geneva Mae (Ritcey) Conrad. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Lorna was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Rose Bay. Lorna’s faith in God was unwavering and this devotion led her to serve as volunteer organist at Lockeport United Baptist Church for over 40 years as well as President of their United Baptist Women’s Missionary Society.With her move to Cumberland County in later life, she involved herself with the Oxford United Baptist Church family who surrounded her with love and care.

Lorna graduated from the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax,Nurses Training in 1945, and then completed a post graduate Certificate in Public Health Nursing at the University of Toronto in 1949. She worked with Victorian Order of Nurses, Halifax Branch,1945-1947, and as Nurse-in-Charge, Amherst Branch,1948-49 and in 1949 she initiated the first semi-rural branch in Nova Scotia for the Victorian Order of Nurses in Lockeport, N S.

In 1952, she married and spent all of her married life in Lockeport where she and her husband raised their two daughters.

Lorna was involved in many volunteer organizations : Canadian Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Service, Lockeport School Board, Ragged Island Historical Society, Little School Museum, Lockeport Garden Club and Order of the Eastern Star Crescent Chapter 70.

She is survived by her daughters, Judith (Daniel) Creaser; Bragg Creek, Alberta, Barbara (Wayne Crossan) Caulfield; Oxford, N.S., step-brother, James Romkey; Mass,U.S.A., granddaughter, Jana Creaser, two grandsons, Marc Creaser and John Caulfield, and numerous cousins.

Besides her parents, Lorna was pre-deceased by her husband, Lyndon and step-brother, Richard Romkey and a brother in infancy.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Rose Bay from where a funeral service to celebrate Lorna’s life will be held at 2:00 p. m., the Rev.Willis Ott officiating. Interment to follow in Shepherd’s Hill Cemetery, Riverport.
