Obituary for
Douglas Fairbanks Rhodenizer
Rhodenizer, Douglas Fairbanks, 89, of Dean’s Corner, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Friday February 17, 2017.
Born on Mosher’s Island, on May 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Evangeline (Stevens) and Clarence Rhodenizer of Second Peninsula.
Doug began his working career as a taxi driver in Halifax. When Doug and Shirley returned to the Lunenburg area, he started working for Powers Brothers Limited as a draftsman until their closure in 1985.
He continued working in his field at Halifax Plumbers and ABCO in Mahone Bay until his retirement.
Doug was a faithful member of the Northwest Baptist Church and was actively involved in the choir for 49 years.
During his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, mowing, feeding the ducks and the deer, playing cards and doing jigsaw puzzles. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his great grandchildren especially playing “rabbit snare” and giving tractor rides around the property.
Doug is survived by his wife, Shirley (Wilson) of Harbour View Haven who he faithfully visited since her admittance. Also surviving are his children, Debbie (Dartmouth), Wendy (Bridgewater), Kevin (Heather)(Martin’s Brook), grandchildren, Darrell (Joanna), Ken (Holly), Melissa (Matt), Jeff (Amy), Elizabeth, great grandchildren, Jacob, Ella, Jack, Chelsea, Alexa, Kara, brother, Paul (Althea) and half sister, Evelyn (Wilfred) Stevens.
He was predeceased by his half brother, Neil Harnish.
The funeral service will be Thursday February 23, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Northwest Baptist Church, Rev. Richard Moore, officiating. A private family committal service will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg.
No flowers by request. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Northwest Baptist Lift Fund, the Second Peninsula Cemetery Foundation or Harbour View Haven.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at Harbour View Haven, the paramedics, the ER staff at both FMH and SSRH and the fourth floor staff at SSRH. Thanks also to Sweeny’s Funeral Home for their care of our father.
