Joyce Shirley Benteau
It is with great sadness that the family of Joyce Shirley Benteau, 89, of Blockhouse, announces her passing, on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Born in Lunenburg, she was the daughter of the late Stanford and Effie (Dares) Ritcey.

In her earlier years, Joyce took a stenographer’s course in Halifax, and worked for a number of years at the Dockyard in Halifax and after returning to Lunenburg, worked at Medical Records and Admitting at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Joyce was a member of St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church, Lunenburg and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and over the years enjoyed playing piano, learning Tai Chi, knitting, quilt-making and sewing, swimming several times a week and many will remember her for driving her scooter around Lunenburg. Most important in her life was time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and of course her beloved cats.

Joyce is survived by daughters, Sharon (Patrick) Burke, Lunenburg; Veronica (Charles) Daurie, Mason’s Beach; Annette Cleveland, Lunenburg; sons, Dean Benteau, Gold River and Gary Benteau, Blockhouse; grandchildren, Laura, Erin, Meghan, Michael, Jessie, Jordan, Stefan and Kyle. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Benteau, brother, Elvin Ritcey and half-brother, Cecil Dares.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #. 3, Lunenburg. A Mass for Christian Burial to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church, Lunenburg, Father James MacDonald, OMI officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church or to SHAID Tree Animal Shelter.
