It is with deep sadness that the family of Captain Ernest George Skinner, 90, of First South, announces his passing on Saturday March 11, 2017, with his wife and family by his side at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Born in Miller’s Passage, N.L., he was a son of the late Simeon and Ellen (Bungay) Skinner.

Ernest was a member of St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church, Lunenburg.

At the age of Thirteen, Ernest spent two summers working on the military base in Argentia, N.L. He then hbegan his fishing career at the age of fifteen, dory fishing off the Grand Banks. He then joined the merchant marines during WW II as a cook’s assistant, lying about his age in order to serve. After the war he returned home to go scallop fishing out of Riverport, and over the years worked his way through the ranks, until in 1972 he made Captain and remained such until his retirement as captain of the vessel “John Richard”.

Not one to remain idle, he worked at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg for thirteen years. Ernest was an avid outdoorsman, with a great love of sport fishing and snare setting for rabbits. He was also the designated “deer cleaner” for Pat’s many deer kills over the years.

Family and friends will remember his unfailing support for his team, the Boston Bruins, which has been passed on to his family and hours of entertainment watching the W.W.F.

Ernest is survived by his loving wife Priscilla, daughters, Ellen (Michael) Selig; Spectacle Lakes, Monica (Cecil) Boutcher; Spectacle Lakes, sons, David (Kim); Mahone Bay, Jack (Wendy); Spectacle Lakes, Pat (Tammy); Back Centre, and sister, Bess Strowbridge of Harbour Breton, N.L. He will also be missed greatly by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by sisters, Agnes Snook, Debbie Skinner and brother, Thomas.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg with visitation on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 from 7-9 p.m., and where a memorial service will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Father Jim MacDonald, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.
