It is with great sadness that the family of Lawrence Sinclair Berg, 94, of Lunenburg, and formerly of Mahone Bay, announces his passing on Friday, April 21, 2017 in the Veteran’s Unit of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Sinclair Berg of Port Elgin, NB and Mabel (Demone) Berg of Lunenburg. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Betty and brother Douglas.

Lawrence lost his father at three years of age and moved to Boston along with his mother and brother Douglas, for four years. He later returned to Lunenburg to live with his grandparents. Lawrence attended Lunenburg Academy; completing school in 1940. He excelled in mathematics, geometry, French and Latin. Prior to enlisting for WW II, Lawrence received a surveying degree from Dalhousie University; and then completed his army training in Petawawa, ON.

Lawrence initially served with a Canadian artillery regiment but wanted to fight as an infantryman on the front lines. He got his chance when he joined the Royal 22nd Regiment of Quebec, the “VanDoos”. Lawrence assembled with his regiment in North Africa and fought against the Nazis through Sicily; into Italy all the way to Rome. His regiment served in France and then into Germany. His last action of WW II was with the rescue of the starving population of Apeldoorn in Holland.

Following the war, Lawrence worked in the field of surveying and exploration in the oil fields of Alberta. He returned to live in Mahone Bay and worked for a period of time with the Manual Life Assurance Company. In the late 1950’s and up until the 1990’s Lawrence maintained an independent tire sales business from his home in Mahone Bay. He was known by young and old drivers alike for offering excellent deals on automotive tires.

Lawrence’s life centered around his wife Evelyn (Betty), his mother, grandmother and Betty’s parents. He met his lifetime sweetheart at the age of fifteen and before he enlisted, they vowed to stay true to each other. They were married in 1954. He and his wife enjoyed dining out, ballroom dancing and travelling within Canada and the U.S.A. Family was important to Lawrence. He believed in “C’est la vie” (That’s life) and always attributed his well being to that saying.

He will be missed by his nephew Chris (Norma) Berg, Lunenburg, their children Elaina, Molendinar, QSLD, Australia and Rebecca of Orangeville, ON; cousins, Wayne (Elaine) Demone, Garden Lots, Louise Strickland, Sunnybrook and Richard Collette, Everett, MA.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #. #, Lunenburg, and where a memorial service to celebrate Lawrence’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m., 2017. Rev. Dr. Laurence Mawhinney officiating. Interment to follow in Park Cemetery, Mahone Bay.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations made to Mahone Bay United Baptist Church, Mahone Bay or St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg would be appreciated by the family.
