Obituary for Beverly Jane Cluett (Faulkenham)

Beverly Jane Cluett (Faulkenham)
It is with great sadness that the family of Beverly Jane (Faulkenham) Cluett, 87 of Lunenburg announces her passing on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Jessen and Dora Belle (Ernst) Falkenham.

Beverly had a full and active life and loved the town of Lunenburg where she resided and spent many happy years volunteering in the many organizations within the town.

In her earlier years, Beverly was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and after the marriage to her husband William she was a faithful member of St. John’s Anglican Church, where she taught Sunday school and was Synod delegate and parish council member. Beverly was past president of the Ladies Guild and ACW and after the church fire of 2001, took an active interest in restoring the Brass fixtures of St. John’s.

Active within her community, she worked for 25 years behind the scenes, supporting her husband, William as he progressed from secretary, manager, vice president and eventually president of the Fisheries Exhibition and Fishermen’s Reunions, eventually serving as vice president herself in 1975 and becoming the first woman president in 1976 where she served for 14 years until she retired in 1990.

Beverly was very proud of her community and was always looking for ways to promote it. She became an active member of the Queen of the Sea Committee and planned their 50th Reunion. She also spent many happy hours supporting the Dory Races in Lunenburg and Gloucester, Mass. Beverly also served on the committee that organized the 225th Anniversary Re-enactment of the Settlers of Lunenburg and organized the Lunenburg 250th Anniversary Parade. During the Royal Visit of Charles and Diana, she was also very proud to have organized the “Welcome to our Way of Life” Walkabout.

Her fierce community spirit contributed to her vision that Lunenburg should have a monument that paid tribute to all fishermen. To this end, she passionately chaired the fundraising campaign responsible for the construction of the Lunenburg Fishermen’s Memorial Monument.

Her fundraising talents also extended to the challenge of building a new exhibit building and after five years of tireless work with the government, the new International Exhibit Centre was built.

Beverly was one of the founding members of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she served as president, treasurer, first and second vice president and chairperson for Ways and Means. She was also charter president of the Lunenburg Jaycette’s, where she received a life membership. An active member of the Lunenburg Art Gallery, Beverly was chair of the gift case and hospitality committees. She was also a member of the Lunenburg Heritage Society, the Lunenburg Curling Club, was a founding member of the Lunenburg Craft Festival and Christkindl Market and supported her husband William who played Santa Claus and was Town Crier for the Town of Lunenburg for many years.

In earlier years Beverly was a member of the Lunenburg Skating club where she taught figure skating for eight years. She was a member of many clubs such as the Little Theatre Group, Badminton Club, Curling Club, & Yacht Club. She also enjoyed square dancing, skating with the Brittle Bones and spending time on the waters sailing with friends.

Over the years, Beverly served on many boards such as the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, the World Fishing Exhibition – Halifax, Bonny Lea Farm, the Lighthouse Publishing – W.A.Y.S. and Awards Committee and the Tourist Industry Association of Nova Scotia T.I.A.N.S where for eight years she served as secretary and chairperson – Awards Committee.

For all of this service, Beverly was the recipient of many awards of recognition from such organizations as the New Bedford Mass. Fishermen’s Association, the Tourism Association of Nova Scotia (T.I.A.N.S), the Town of Lunenburg, Lunenburg Board of Trade and Lighthouse Publishing W.A.Y.S. She was also presented with the Democracy Award by Dr. John Hamm commemorating Lunenburg’s 250th year anniversary (1758 – 2008).

While leading a very busy volunteer schedule, her family came first and she was most happy at home as a dedicated wife, mother and grand-mother to her family. We have all been blessed to have known such a great Lady.

Beverly is survived by son, Richard William Cluett (Doris Snook) of Martin’s Brook; daughter Rachel Jane Cluett, Hubbards/Lunenburg; grandchildren Jillian, Ashley, Jessen (Sarah) and Jessica Jane Curilla (Jeff); brother-in-law Dr. Maxwell (Lucy) Cluett, Wilmington, Delaware; sisters-in-law, Janet Cluett, London, ON and Carolyn (Rick) Chenhall, Dartmouth and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William Selig Cluett on April 22, 2013, mother-in-law and step-father-in-law June and W. Guy Tanner and brother-in-law, Dr. Alfred Cluett.

Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Beverly will be held Sunday April 30,2017 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Michael Mitchell, officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church, the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, the Lunenburg Fishermen’s Memorial Monument.
