Obituary for Douglas "Ivan" Allen

It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas “Ivan” Allen, 92, of Garden Lots, announces his passing on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Born in Rum Point, Garden Lots, he was the son of the late John and Sadie (MacDonald) Allen.

Ivan began his working career at the Lunenburg Foundry during the war before embarking on a 21 year career on the Dry Dock at the Marine Railway. He then was employed for 12 years with National Sea Products, Lunenburg, until his retirement.

He was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg, where he was a member of the Board of Managers of the church. Ivan also proudly served as an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #23, Lunenburg and in his earlier years was a member of the Lunenburg Yacht Club where he enjoyed schooner racing.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Mary, daughter, Sharon (Ronald) Thurlow, Lunenburg; son, Bruce, Dartmouth; brother, Ronald (Madelyn) Allen, Lunenburg; grandchildren, Jeffrey Thurlow, Brian Thurlow both of Lunenburg; Michelle (Chris) England, Jonathan Allen and four great-grandchildren, Reiken, Jedrik, Bexton, Hailey and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Murray, Albert and Bernard and a sister, Marion.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. #3, Lunenburg. A Graveside Committal service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Garden Lots Cemetery, Garden Lots, Rev. Dr. P. A. McDonald, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg or a charity of choice.
