Obituary for Maria de Vries

It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that the family of Maria de Vries is announcing her passing at the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater on Friday, January 26, 2018 at the age of 74.

She was the daughter of the late Capt. Claar van der Harst and Geertruide Streefland. Born in Holland, she and her husband immigrated to Canada in 1963 and settled in Lunenburg, where they were blessed with three children. In 1971 they moved to Kingsburg, where they bought an old hobby farm. According to some wags, it was like two foggy minds moving out into the fog.

Maria was a very active lady with a keen mind. She was involved in starting a nursery school in Lunenburg. Once in Kingsburg, she milked the cow, tended her large flower and vegetable gardens, before she saw the kids off to school and then went off to attend to her duties as a municipal Councillor, school board chairperson and LaHave Manor board member and chair. She was also active UCW member and Girl Guide leader. All this while her husband was skylarking out on the ocean more than half the time. Maria somehow found time to do a marvelous job of raising her three children. She was a wonderful handcrafter who created beautiful hooked mats and would knit anything that took her fancy.

Maria's bright star was dimmed too early by the clouds of ill health. Her passing has made our world a little poorer. Still, we were lucky to have known her and loved her.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Cornelis (Casey) de Vries, sons, Marc, Derrick (Vivian) and daughter, Nicolette (Darryl), grandchildren, Dylan, Madeleine, Aaron, Abigail and Morgan; sisters, Clara (Hans) and Marianne (Cornelis), brother, Leen (Tiny).

She was predeceased by her step-sister, Mieneke and brother-in-law, Ernst.

A memorial service to celebrate Maria's life will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 1, 2018 at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, Rev. Ron Frampton, officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery, Kingsburg.

No flowers by family request, memorial donations in Maria's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of N. S. or to a charity of your choice.
