Obituary for Audrey Arabella Lucretia Bailey

After a long and full life, it is with great sadness that the family of Audrey Arabella Lucretia Bailey, 106, of Middle LaHave announces her passing on Saturday March 10, 2018 at Rosedale Home for Special Care, New Germany.

Born in Lunenburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ellen Crouse of Crouse's Settlement.

Audrey's earlier life was spent in Crouse’s Settlement where she walked to school and church regularly. On February 2, 1931 she married Cedric and moved to Middle LaHave and raised her seven children, much on her own as her husband Cedric spent all of his life at sea. After the death of her husband on November 6, 1972, her next journey as a widow lasted 46 years, often spending time with family, travelling and taking bus trips. Audrey lived in her home by herself until she was 101, cooking her own meals and for family members on weekends. With the help of family members and the Lunenburg County Home Care she remained in her home until she was 103 and then she moved to Rosedale Home for Special Care in New Germany-this becoming her new home until the time of her passing. At Rosedale she enjoyed playing Bingo, going to church and the lexicon club, as well as looking out for son-in-law Ron.

She was a faithful member of St. John’s United Church, Middle LaHave, and served as church treasurer for 49 years and in 2000 she received a lifetime membership with the United Church Women's group.
Audrey was active up until the age of 99 as a member of the Bluenose Senior Citizens Group, where she enjoyed a good game of cards with friends.

She was a modest, firm and intelligent woman with a great belief in God. Her love of life, family, friends and the community at large, were so important to her. Audrey’s quiet courage, strength of spirit, creativity and sense of humour will be carried forward by all those who knew and loved her. She was a golden thread of love spun invisibly through all our hearts and lives. She lived by and often quoted the following phrases "everybody's different", "sometimes in life you don't have a choice", "one day at a time and never give up "and finally "toodle-oo".

Audrey is survived by daughters, Jacqueline (Lloyd) Burns, Marilyn Oickle, Diane (David) Leary; sons, Bruce (Lucy) Bailey and Charles (Barbara) Bailey, daughter-in-law, Arlene Bailey, 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Cedric, daughter, Gretchen Fell, son, David, brothers, Murray and Frank, step-mother, Minnie, grandson, Rodney, sons-in-law, Ronald and Douglas (Buster) and daughter-in-law, Ruth.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, where a funeral service to celebrate Audrey’s life will be on Friday at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Ron Frampton, officiating. Interment will be in the Middle LaHave Cemetery.

Flowers from the immediate family, memorial donations in Audrey’s memory may be made to St. John’s United Church or to Rosedale Home for Special Care.
