Obituary for Doris Lorraine Harnish

It is with great sadness that the family of Doris Lorraine Harnish, 80, of Bridgewater and formerly of Mill Cove, announces her passing on Monday, April 9, 2018,at Ryan Hall in Bridgewater.

Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Emma (Sawler) Wilson.

Doris will be remembered by family and friends as a wonderful homemaker. She was always ready to set an extra place at her table for company and those who just dropped in. Cooking, baking and her preserved goods were all part of the meal.

She was an expert at all sorts of word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and TV game shows.

Her hobbies included sewing, knitting and doll collecting. It was such a pleasure to get a tour of her "doll room". She loved visits to PEI, toured New York City, had a winter in Florida with her sister, Jean, and had many visits to Toronto with Shane while Kevin showed her the sites of Ottawa. Five years ago she and Cheryl had a fun filled trip to Disney World.

Her greatest source of happiness came from being surrounded by family including Donnie and Elsa her favorite son and daughter inlaw. She created so many special times for her grandchildren Jody, Ryan and Katherine. As she and her husband, Melvin, neared 50 years of marriage, he suffered a debilitating stroke and she cared for him during years of chronic illness.

As she struggled with Alzheimer's she was robbed of getting to know her great grandchildren Declan and Colton, Gweneth and Bronwyn, Emmett and Freya.

Doris was a woman of deep faith and was a founding and active member of the Hubbard’s congregation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Doris is survived by daughter, Cheryl (Donnie) Stevens, Bridgewater; sons, Kevin Harnish, Ottawa; Shane (Elsa) Harnish, Richmond Hill, ON; grandchildren, Jody Stevens (Louise Gallant) Mill Cove Ryan Stevens (Marian) Clayton Park; Katherine Sharp (Ben) Crouse Settlement, great grandchildren, Emmett and Freya, Declan and Colton, Gweneth and Bronwyn sisters, Jean (Floyd) Spidle, Clearland; Rose Joyce, Truro, Frances (Clarence) Stevens, Dartmouth; Carol Juzkiw, (Roman) Windsor, ON; brothers, Doug Wilson, Toronto; George Wilson, Martin’s Point.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Melvin Harnish and sister, Margaret Kidson brothers Walter and Donnie and sister Shirley in infancy..

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg where a gathering for family and friends will be held Friday, from 2-4 pm.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation and the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
