Obituary for Robert "David" McBride

It is with deep sadness the family of Robert “David” McBride, 89, of Halifax, announces his passing on Monday, June 25, 2018, at the QE II Halifax Infirmary, Halifax.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Robert and Violet (Creaser) McBride. He was the last of his immediate family.

During the summer months as a child, David spent his time visiting Riverport with extended family. Later, as a teenager, he moved with his parents to Chester for several years, but ultimately moved back to Halifax to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering at Dalhousie University. He began his career with the Department of the Environment-Water Resources doing field work and later became Regional Chief until his retirement. In 1992, he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his service and contributions to the International Joint Commission.

David met the love of his life, Joy, in Lunenburg and they were married for 62 years. Together, as committed parents, they created a beautiful family. During the early years together, they were active members of St. Phillip’s Anglican Church in Halifax and one of David’s greatest joys was singing in the choir with his daughters. There they also established lifelong friendships, Bridge and camping companions.

David became such a health and fitness enthusiast, later in life, that he was nicknamed SuprDav. Around the age of 55, he began to walk and was soon running long distance races and marathons as a member of Fast Company running club. At Dartmouth Sportsplex, he enjoyed many years pursuing an active lifestyle. He loved playing golf at Bluenose Golf Club and Osprey Ridge. He bowled until recently and still loved to win. His spirit was contagious and he will be missed.

Heartfelt thanks to the Newfoundland Ladies (Olive, Mamie, Carol and Maude) and Ken Tanner, who demonstrated such care and compassion towards our dad.

David is survived by daughters, Anna (Patrick) Hirtle, Wileville; Susan McBride (Jason), Halifax; Randi (Joseph) Flinn, Bedford; Kathy (Rodney) MacIntosh, Halifax; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Joy (Nodding) in January, 2018.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy #3, Lunenburg. A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 2:00 pm Rev. Alvin Westgate, officiating.

Reception to be held at Sweeny’s Funeral Home following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Halifax
