It is with profound sadness that the family of the late Brian Rowlands announce his passing at the age 59 on August 16, 2018 following a lengthy illness.

Born in Lunenburg, NS – he was the second son born to Mary Rowlands of Lunenburg, and the Late Capt. Roderick (Rod) Rowlands. Left to mourn besides his Mother are loving wife, Valerie (Haughn) Rowlands, brothers, Deacon Roderick Rowlands (Leslie) and Alan (Donna) Rowlands, sister, Rosemary (“Jake”) Smith; nephews, Sean and Gregory, Aaron and Adam, niece, Amanda Rowlands (goddaughter); special “Aunt” Margaret “Maggie” Fitzpatrick, Marystown NF and other aunts and uncles in Nfld as well as cousins Teresa Lohnes and Attracta Rowlands of Lunenburg and several others in Nfld and NB.

He was predeceased by his father, Roderick and a brother, David.

Being called to the sea in his late teens – Brian was an “old time” scallop fisherman. He acquired his Fishing Master Class III and Watch Keeping Mate, Foreign Going tickets as a young man, while acquiring his Grade 12 High School Diploma from Nova Scotia Community College (Bridgewater) in 2010. His employment over the years started on the oil tankers with Irving Oil, although was employed with Deep Sea Trawlers/Clearwater during most of his working career. While aboard many trawlers out of the Port of Lunenburg, many years were worked aboard the Garry & Graham while his fishing career concluded aboard The Atlantic Protector. He also was employed by Terra Beata Cranberry Farm for several years until 2013.

Brian was a very pleasant, honest and caring man - always ready to lend a helping hand. He had a great sense of humour. He was a movie buff, especially enjoying old time classics as well as home renovations and maintenance, shopping and the beach; was an avid walker and loved his family pets, leaving behind his special Shih Tzu companion – Lilly. A very social individual, he enjoyed get-togethers with family and friends but, conversely, was very much a “home body.”

David Martell, Hughie Fraser and Gregory Turnbull as well many of the health care professionals at The Lunenburg Medical Centre, Fishermen’s Memorial and South Shore Regional Hospitals, the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Paramedics of EHS, Lunenburg Fire Department and Kinley’s Drugs, etc.

A Prayer Vigil for family and friends will be held on Tues, August 21 at 6.30 pm followed by visitation from 7:00-9:00 pm at Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. A Mass for Christian Burial will be held from St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church, York Street, Lunenburg at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22nd – followed by committal at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg and a reception at the Lunenburg Curling Club.

In lieu of family flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church, Health Services Foundation of the South Shore, the QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax or the charity of your choice.
