Obituary for John Finley "Jesse " James

It is with sadness that the family of John Finley James (Jesse) of Lunenburg and formerly of Second Peninsula announces his passing at the Veteran's Unit, Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg on Thursday, October 30, 2014
.
Born in London, Ontario, on February 21, 1926, he was the son of the late Dr. Arthur and Mary (Marshall) James.

John served during World War II, with the Canadian Army in England as an X-Ray Technician and Stretcher Bearer and served as a paratrooper in the American Occupation Forces in Germany for one year following the end of the War.

He then went to work for several years with Irving Oil and later became a Fisheries Inspector with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans retiring after 29 years of service.

Active within his community, he was President of the Fisheries Museum, a member of the Lunenburg Rod and Gun Club, Lunenburg Curling Club and the Lunenburg Yacht Club, a faithful member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg and a 67 year Legion member and a lifetime member of the Unity Lodge # 8 of the Masonic Order.

In his spare time, John was an avid vegetable gardener, Christmas tree grower, sheep farmer, hunter and fisherman. He was well known for rescuing boaters in distress on Prince’s Inlet and as a noted storyteller. In later years he was a member of the “Taiwo Warriors”, a Tuesday lunch gathering of former and retired military men.

He is survived by his wife Roberta (Sarty) MacNab, daughters, Jennifer James (Mark Sweeny), Rose Bay; Janet James, Victoria, BC; sons, Andrew (Hana), Halifax; Colin, Port Hope, ON; grandchildren, Chris MacNeil, Tyler Marchak, Tanya James, Martin James, and great granddaughters, Audrey and Scarlett Marchak and great-grandson Max MacNeil, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth (Powers) James, second wife, Mildred Herman, infant daughter, Ellen Louise and a brother, Donald.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A service to celebrate John’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2014 at St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Archdeacon Michael Mitchell officiating. Interment will be in the Second Peninsula Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic or to the Parkinson’s Society.
