Letoile

It is with great sadness that I try and write something that captures the memories and time I spent with Letoile. Letoile was my last surviving grandparent and with her passing ends a chapter in our family that bared witness to so many changes to our family and community. Born in 1923 in the community of Bayport with nine brothers & sisters, Letoile never strayed far from home. So a world traveler she was not, instead she listened intently to our stories and I believed this is what gave her great pleasure. She always loved a good coffee party that brought family into her home for a visit. As a young man I mowed the lawn & trimmed their hedges in the summers. Letoile always had a treat for me when I was done, a butter tart was my reward and of course a cup of coffee. This I guess could be something that would be expected for a grandson to do, mow the lawn. However, I found myself staying and talking to them, sharing a bit of my time with them and hearing stories told by my grandfather. Freeman Tanner, my Grandfather was a bit of a world Traveler for his time, he sailed on many fishing and merchant vessels up and down the coast of North America. Oh boy could he tell a story or two and I loved to here them. Im sure Letoile loved to here them as well, because if he was telling the stories then that meant he came home safely. Those trips were very dangerous by todays standers and I will treasure the stories forever. I have tried to share a bit of my family with Letoile. Over the years her sharp mind was always up for a story to be told. Her battle with Parkinsons disease made it impossible for her to stay in her own home and she moved into a senior care facility even here she loved to see family. It made her day a bit brighter to hear stories of where we were on vacation, or how the family was doing. I know this doesnt give a lot of insight into who Letoile was or to what she believed in, or maybe it does. She was a great listener, she raised two daughters and kept the home a home. She was there for her family and that in of itself was a sacrifice she willingly made. RIP nanny.
