"Mad Money"

When I was a teenager I went to visit my relatives in N.S. and stayed with Aunt Loretta & Uncle Basil. The whole family went out of their way to make me feel welcome and I will always look back with great fondness on my time with them. One evening Karen and I were getting ready to go out when Uncle Basil gestured for me to come into the living room. I did and he proceeded to try to give me money, which I refused. He patiently explained (this is not verbatim but as close as I remember it) "Look, if you go out and perhaps meet a young fella and he ends up making you mad you'll need money to get home," I responded that I had money but nope, he would not be satisfied until I accepted the money he offered..."just in case I might have need of it". This is just a small example of how thoughtful and caring this good man was. I did not need to use his "mad money" and returned it the next day, but it is a memory I hold in my heart that makes me chuckle and also makes me weep. Aw Uncle Basil, how will we all go on without you? Thank you for teaching me to always be prepared and also for the deeper lesson, the one that touched my heart. "You matter" was that unspoken but profoundly acted out message that I will forever treasure.. I had always loved my aunts and uncles and had always had a special spot for my Uncle Basil - my time with the family in N.S. cemented those feelings and even though it has been ages since then I will always love all of the Grandys. Uncle Basil, may you sail with the angels and well enjoy your well earned rest and forever fishing trip. I love you, Your niece, Carol
