I was Able Seaman Sonarman Ross Haynes (18 yrs old) in the mid 60's joining the ship's company of H.M.C.S. Saguenay that was forming in Halifax. The ship, then in Esquimalt BC, had been converted to a helicopter carrying destroyer and CMDR Plant was to be the first "Old Man" of this new version of a storied named ship. I was a long way down the rank order from our Captain and my knowing him was from that distant vantage point, a true subordinate. Yet from that rank and social distance in the RCN there was something special about who CMDR Plant was that has resonated with me all these years. On occasion, I would through my business and community activities, meet CAPT (ret) Plant and make my historic connecton to him known introducing myself as a former lower deck shipmate. Always elegant and cordial Mr. Plant would remember me and we would exchange a pleasant comment. What does all this mean for you, his loved family and friends? For me Hugh Plant was an inspirational leader. In some way I wanted to emulate him. I was proud of having been part of his ship's company. He was an example of gentlemanly conduct, leadership and honour that made me proud of myself. I wanted to achieve more in my life and his good example was a part of the mix of things that spurred me on. Little things that one does can go a long way having consequences for good that we may never know or appreciate. For me Hugh Plant was one of these people whose conduct of their everyday living as the comanding office of his ship influenced my life. I admired Hugh Plant and his example to me as a young man in the same service, RCN, was inspirational. It shows that people who have lived a good and honourable life, have far reaching positive effects in other's lives and in that spirit I celebrate Hugh Plant's life and my distant memory. I pass on my thanks and condloences to you his family and friends who knew and loved him. My Condolences, Ross Haynes, QC Halifax, NS
